Oahu, Hawaii - Hiking

Oahu, Hawaii - Hiking

Oahu is a lush island with lots of scenery! From the coastline to the jungles of the island, there’s a lot of hiking trails. Here is a short list of some of the island’s most popular hikes! I’ve added Google Map links for navigation!

Diamond Head State Monument

One of the islands most iconic hikes and scenic viewpoints. This is a popular tourist destination so you will not be hiking in solitude. Coming here in the morning, you will beat the crowds as well as get a parking spot quickly. There is a park entry fee of $5 per car or $1 for pedestrians. Usually takes 2 hours to complete. The 360 view of the coastline from the top is worth it!

Koko Head Crater Trail

This intensive hike is not for the faint of heart. The hike is over 1000 stair steps leading 1.8 miles up to the top! Think of it as a great stairmaster workout but with a view! Takes 1-2 hours.

Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

This is an easy hike with scenic views of the southeastern point of the island. Round trip it’s a 1.5 mile hike and has views of the Makapuu Lighthouse, tide pools and you may get lucky and spot some whales!

Kaiwa Ridge (Laniaki Pillbox) Trail

This 1.8 mile hike is moderate but short. Has breath taking views of Kailua, and Mokulua islands. The coast line on this side of the island has some of the brightest hues of turquoise you will ever see!

Stairway to Heaven

This one is for the risk takers. It’s technically illegal to hike it and you can get fined if you get caught. The trail is hidden in a bamboo forest and behind a suburb neighborhood…Yet still some take the risk and hike the 3,500 stair trail along a narrow ridge that takes you above the clouds. Everyone who’s done it, said it is worth it. Just check the weather forecast as dense fog tends to make it difficult for hikers to see anything as they ascend up. Takes 3-4 hours to complete. This blog post summarizes access for those who dare.

Manoa Falls

Close to Waikiki and a short 1.5 miles, the trail is an easy hike to see the Manoa Falls. Parking is $5.

Waimea Falls

Located on the north shore of the island, this hike is an easy paved path accessible to everyone. It is located within a botanical garden and swimming is allowed in the gorgeous waterfall! Changing room and life vests are available on site. Day fee applies of $16.95 per adult, $8.95 per child (ages 4-12).
